Dynamo Mechanisms

چکیده

Dynamo theory is reviewed with particular emphasis on recent developments. There now seems to be a strong case for dynamo eeects that are driven by the magnetic eld itself. This is linked to recent interpretations of the observed stellar cycle periods which suggest that the ratio of cycle frequency to rotational frequency increases, up to some point, with stellar chromospheric activity. This ratio may be interpreted as a measure of the alpha-eeect in dynamo theory, which would then increase with magnetic eld strength. The important question of what happens as stars become fully convective is also addressed. It is argued that the dynamo does not work at the bottom of the convection zone, but in the entire convection zone proper. However, because of turbulent pumping eeects the magnetic eld is pushed to the bottom of the convection zone or, in the case of a fully convective star, to its center.

Mars' paleomagnetic field as the result of a single-hemisphere dynamo.

Mars' crustal magnetic field was most likely generated by dynamo action in the planet's early history. Unexplained characteristics of the field include its strength, concentration in the southern hemisphere, and lack of correlation with any surface features except for the hemispheric crustal dichotomy. We used numerical dynamo modeling to demonstrate that the mechanisms proposed to explain crus...

A two-billion-year history for the lunar dynamo

Magnetic studies of lunar rocks indicate that the Moon generated a core dynamo with surface field intensities of ~20 to 110 μT between at least 4.25 and 3.56 billion years ago (Ga). The field subsequently declined to <~4 μT by 3.19 Ga, but it has been unclear whether the dynamo had terminated by this time or just greatly weakened in intensity. We present analyses that demonstrate that the melt ...

Dynamo, a new zebrafish DVR member of the TGF-β superfamily is expressed in the posterior neural tube and is up-regulated by Sonic hedgehog

Dynamo, a new zebrafish DVR detected from late gastrula on in the posterior neural plate, becomes restricted to the ventral region of the trunk neural tube, with the exclusion of floor plate and adjacent cells. Analysis of dynamo expression in zebrafish axial mutants indicated that dynamo expression in the ventral region of the central nervous system (CNS) is induced by axial mesoderm and maint...

Dynamo transition in low-dimensional models.

Two low-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic models containing three velocity and three magnetic modes are described. One of them (nonhelical model) has zero kinetic and current helicity, while the other model (helical) has nonzero kinetic and current helicity. The velocity modes are forced in both these models. These low-dimensional models exhibit a dynamo transition at a critical forcing amplitude...

Non-normal and Stochastic Amplification in Turbulent Dynamo: Subcritical Case

Our attention focuses on the stochastic dynamo equation with non-normal operator that give an insight into the role of stochastics and non-normality in the galactic magnetic field generation. The main point of this Letter is a discussion of the generation of a large-scale magnetic field that cannot be explained by traditional linear eigenvalue analysis. We present a simple stochastic model for ...
